Ciudadanos de la Ciudad (The City)

Ciudadanos de la Ciudad (The City)

They sleep like puppies in a pack.

Bodies spread on couches and floors

once bedrooms are full.

They can never wait to relieve

themselves of the burdens they bear.

Relief is bought by the case

and found by the can.

The fight comes on,

as they pour

relief down thirsty throats.

Home is always so far.

Home is always so far away.

Mothers, Brothers & Sisters

Worry and Pray

as Fathers wonder.

Guadalupe will watch over them.

Ella les cuida,

sus hijos del Sol.*

*She cares for them, her children of the sun.

Our Lady (The City)

Our Lady (The City)

She seizures

from time to time.

Her body tosses,

releasing stress.

She can’t help it.

We cower

in those moments,

terrified by her strength.

She offers no apology,

none is needed.

We have always known

her condition,

we just look the other way.

We always need the reminder.

She keeps us close

as we return to the

comfort of the controllable.

Casey's (The City) Draft 2

Casey's

Beneath her green awning

(down a flight of stairs)

you can hear the glasses clinking.

Survivor of a forgotten age,

her memories gather dust

on these city streets.

Monument to a time

that exists in dust covered novels,

history peers through wood paneling.

Taps pour amber.

Glasses fill quickly,

empty almost as fast.

Her walls could be

history books speaking

through yellowed pictures.

Cars pass in the rain

beneath streetlight.

Inside, glasses clink.

She warms us from the inside..

Night & Dawn in the Heart (The City) Draft 2

Night & Dawn In The Heart

The heart beats slowly

as night wears on.

A flow of redillumination

pumps in through her.

Platelets pass through

with unusual ease.

Residents rest until

sun cracks across the sky.

She warms slowly

in her farthest reaches.

Her camera eyes

open wide their gaze.

The pace quickens as

blood rushes in

once more.

Forgotten Architecture(The City)

Forgotten Architecture

Beneath the glittering glass and steel,

her art deco face remains

hidden from view.

Buildings stand

like snapshots of youth

before she was criss-crossed in concrete.

Fante and Bukowski

would recognize

the face that haunted them.

Dreaming of Bunker Hill,

riding rail cars,

times left behind.

She still remembers,

still dreams of lost

and forgotten things.

Her eyes gaze to the heavens,

the ocean and desert,

and glisten with a promise

not yet realized.

Beaches (The City)

Beaches (The City)

They bask on her shores

beneath golden rain.

Children laugh contagiously

in their play.

Water laps the shoreline

as bodies bathe.

Wind blowing breath on burning skin.

A hum

can be heard

cutting through

unconscious connotations.

It buries itself beneath

the cries of the gulls

and crashing waves.

She sings softly

in our ears

never letting us forget

her voice.

The City (Draft 4)

The City

I

Rising over the desert

it spreads across the mountains,

beaming softly across the

endless sprawl.

Reaching

water and sand,

waves crash into piers

as bodies dive

into natures embrace.

Towering figures framed

against the mountains,

pillars of ingenuity

reflecting rays cast

upon glass and steel.

Arteries begin

pumping platelets

from North to South,

East to West.

By the entrance to Poseidon’s realm

the beasts stand,

craning their sinuous

mechanized necks.

The relic of a sentinel

stands watch over a task

long since relinquished.

II

Alive and breathing,

life engages its patrons.

Peering through windows

the box chatters on as

beauties recline into

the folds of suburban decadence.

The world is a small expanse

best seen through tinted

eyes for second sight.

Palatial homes filled with

an emptiness

few could understand

or desire.

Manes beam deceit

of affluence worn

as proudly as

any regal regalia

from a vanquished monarchy.

The sound of blades and

arboreal amputations

cut and clamor,

the only disturbances

in such placid places.

Brown skin

tanned like leather,

stewards of a past

not as distant as some

would care to think.

They always watch them

when they encroach,

like a stain moving

and corrupting.

Always so ready,

ready to assume the worst.

Black and Whites

pull up screaming,

rubber gripping,

screeching to a halt.

Freudian compensation is drawn

and thrust out.

Slugs puncture hungry

vitals shocked by sudden

scarlet spurts.

The soft sound of

meat hitting asphalt.

A stain removed,

another spreads

like an amoeba

expanding.

The box will have more

to talk about.

III

We travel within

Arteries,

Veins

& Capillaries

cast in concrete.

Blood at a standstill

time to time

(more often than anyone would like).

It pumps from Arteries

to Veins

& Capillaries

for far reaching extremities.

At the center of it all

the heart never sleeps.

It beats endlessly.

It beats endlessly.

IV

Dreams

draw them in

like a wide eyed doe

drawn from the forest.

Short on money

(isn’t that always the case?),

fueled on endless ambition,

the heart draws them in

to streets lined

with names immortalized

into the stars themselves.

Lucky breaks and losing streaks

mar in almost equal measure.

It’ll be a great story

when the camera eyes

capture the ineffable essence

that’ll one day be lost

to hubris and indulgence.

On the hillside

beckons a name

as towering as

Colossus &

Ozymandias.

Cast into hearts,

molding ambition,

standing

hollow backed

and

beautiful.

V

In the shadow of the heart,

they wander the jungle

of it’s interior.

Souls wear

the endless toil

of life across

their faces.

There is nowhere

but here.

Dirty streets

clogged with cast off dreams.

The failed state of hope

occupies like an

invading army

waiting for the last body

to drop.

VI

Lights flicker on

across a patchwork

grid

one by one.

Lighting up

the darkness,

we can

never see

the stars above.

Blood flows

quickly through

concrete arteries.

The heart glowing

Blood flowing

Heart beating

On and on

and on…

The Resting Heart

The Resting Heart (The City)
She glows in torrential darkness.

Her streets desolate in the downpour.

She rests

She rests

while she can.

It comes down

Relief and frustration

by the drop.

She slows down

She shows a side of herself

we rarely ever see.

Night & Dawn in the Heart

The heart beats slowly

as the night wears on.

A slower flow of redillumination

pumps in through

her.

Platelets pass through

with an unusual ease.

Her residents rest

until the sun cracks across

the sky.

A new dawn.

The pace quicken as

blood rushes in

once more.
