Rest

Darkness has become gray
Cars idling at the traffic signal
Cars driving by the front door
A restless city alive again
Asleep within the warmth
of bed heavy with blankets
I say goodbye as you rest
When you wake
may the day be good
may the day be kind
may it pass quickly
and bring rest
to you once more

Rest your head
Sleep in the peace
Of Winter's dream
Sleep well dearest
Sleep well

To Be

The act of living is such a hard load
For the living creatures of this world to bear.
It thus was life itself that sought to offer respite
Each day through the simple regenerative act
We have come to know as sleep. The ability
To let subconscious thought emerge fully
Formed beneathe the closed eyes of a weary
Body enables leaps of thought not possible
Through conscious means. Waking is a gradual
State marked by minor movements and
Adjustments until mind and body have
Reached a level of equilibrium in order
Endure the harsh reality of existence

The Journey Begins in the Morning

I am awake because I slept for hours and hours
until my body could no longer tolerate
the restful sleep of a bed.

I woke up achey and uncertain
but certain that I was awake
because I had that at least.

I am awake and certain that
whatever is coming next
is on its way.

I will be on my way
soon enough and
I'll be where I

need to be
even sooner.

Is it beautiful out there?

We have a drink
and listen to the sounds
of the neighborhood
in between brief
pauses in conversation

It has been a long day
and the only question left
to answer

How soon until we go
to sleep
so we can try this again?

The Recovery

Sleep deeply,

sleep peacefully

this hot night

in your hospital bed.

Sunlight awakens

with you,

moonlight

illuminates your

dreams.

This will soon

be a memory.

Enough Rest

Fall asleep at a reasonable hour,
you're not getting any younger,
the decades are beginning to pile up.

It's not so bad now, yet. You wake
up, clear headed, life is in progress.
There are times when the Sun feels

like a stranger smiling at you as you
walk down the street, so you smile
awkwardly, maybe say hello.

There is no one in the house but you.
It's as silent as you want it to be.
There are dogs barking somewhere,

you can't ignore them as they echo
through suburban canyons. Your body
does not ache or thirst. No pain throbs

through your head, you are ready. For
what? For when? There is only one
person with an answer.
