Red Sunrise

Fiery sunrise
Red light floods the sky
A bird is chirping urgently
from a branch
on the tree outside my window
What now
What does she know

The Expected

A sunrise is never sudden
nor unexpected.
Early morning Sunday
driving through abandoned
freeways and streets
with unusual ease.
Night began to fade
into darkest blue.
Darkest blue began to
lighten even further
until at last the sky was a
saturated soft blue
blanketing everything.
For a few moments
there was peace
everywhere in this place
I have always called
my home.

The Preacher

I'm too deep in dreams to ever see the sunrise.
I have seen the sunset many times
over many places
and I never fail to find beauty
in the transition from light to dark.
Blue skies smear with pastels
that gradually darken and fade
until a singular eye
glows across the ocean.
Standing at the beach late at night
I have often wondered about the confluence
of sky and water.
If I were there alone in a boat
would I remember what was ocean
and what was sky?
Would I forget both
and feel only one plane
encompassing both fully?
What would it be like to see a sunrise
from there? Transitioning from dark
to light, to see the sky
give birth to our world once more.
After viewing that
I could begin a new faith
and preach,
not of god and sin,
but of a simple truth
found in an ancient order
that persists everywhere.

Fat Lemons

I confirm consciousness
                                       through various
aches
the sun knocks on the window
wondering if I have woken.

I wave back

he seems content with my answer.

It's nice to have friends checking in

just to see how you are.

This day is a slate marked

with a few tics of chalk-

                                      nothing too serious
to do

to worry about

                        just a slower pace than

            what I am accustomed.

The lemons on my tree have grown fat

and yellow
                  against green leaves

and brown branches-

members of the household
they will soon
have to leave.

The rhythm of this day

                    as steady as my heartbeat.

There is a fluttering of wings

by the lemon tree

                            I wonder-

who could it be?
