I heard a voice begin to sing
from a distant place
I could hear the voice
clearly in my mind
Everywhere I went
the voice followed
singing it's songs
and melodies
I started walking and
decided to walk
until I could find the voice
So I walked and walked
and occasionally slept
then walked and walked
and slept some more
How many days passed
in this manner
I do not know
I kept listening
and walking
and at times I felt closer
At night I would watch the stars
and feel the coolness on my skin
the voice still singing
though a bit more quietly
and now singing lullabies
One night I fell asleep
and when I woke
I could no longer hear the voice
singing nor it's beautiful melodies
I looked towards the blinding sun
and decided to walk home
Every so often I remember
that voice and cry
and wonder if
such beauty could
exist again

biographical fragment
There is no story left to tell that has not been told
but I'll still tell you mine. My flight landed in
Cancun where some relatives picked me up from
the airport. It was hot and humid the moment I
stepped outside the terminal. I could smell the
land itself and I immediately felt at ease. It was
just about sunset as we drove out from the city
to our destination, our hometown, a couple of
hours away. I intently watched the way the sky
loomed perfectly over the forest. I had never
felt the sky feel so ancient and towering. At that
moment I understood why it would have been
easy to believe in a pantheon of gods and goddesses.
The sunset quickly gave way to a darkness that
filled the roads. From time to time we would pass
through a small town. The lights of the square
would be lit as people lounged around the park
and whiled away the time. This scene repeated
itself in every town we saw. By the time we
arrived at my grandparents home it was late
and most of the town was asleep. Warm hellos
after years of not seeing each other were given.
We ate bread and eventually found our way
to sleep.

If I Need Your Help
Haven't forgotten my promises
I have trouble remembering myself lately
I'm still here walking through these days and nights
Am I in love or just breathing
Missives from another lifetime
Scraps of memories
Flashes of a past all too fleeting
Will you help me find a way home
Or will you remind me
There's nowhere to go back to

Am I in love or just breathing
Missives from another lifetime
Scraps of memories
Flashes of a past all too fleeting
Will you help me find a way home
Or will you remind me
There's nowhere to go back to

Stranded by Choice
My Heart is on an island somewhere
off the coast of Southern California.
It missed the boat back to L.A. Harbor
My Conscience almost missed it too
but got there just in time. I just received
a text message from my Heart telling me
to not worry, that it's just going to enjoy
the island for a few more days,
it really wants to go on a hike and see
more of the nightlife there. I can't blame it.
I'd have stayed there longer if I could have.

Tourist
I have been traveling through time
for as long as I can remember.
People never believe me when I tell
them, nor should they. There are
enough crackpots out there as it is.
When asked to prove it, I can't
will it to happen. When it does,
I become unstuck as easily
as closing and opening your eyes.
I used to think they were dreams.
Entering other ages I can watch
and be watched, like viewing
the set of an historical period piece.
Returning to the present feels
as though a great distance has been
crossed.I understand neither the how
or why. If there is a reason, I'm not
sure I could understand or would want to.

Pupa
Roads move us
from destination to destination
with minimal deviation.
We acclimate to ebbs
of time and traffic,
traveling by cocoon,
never emerging the butterfly-
we retain our larval form.
