Bounding

A few days ago I watched as a deer
bounded across the road
and ran by the pond
skirting around its edge
as it went on its way
What was its hurry
What was the danger
Where did it feel safe
I wonder these things
and know those answers
are not for me to have
Not everything
should be known
Let there be mystery
in the small corners
of this world

Places in Memory

Memory jogs through my mind
Stops in Mexico last year
and tells me to remember
being at my grandparents home
The home my mother was raised
The home my many aunts and uncles
played and grew and fought and
became the people I've grown to know
Memory shows me the feeling of wind
against my skin
the town bell ringing and
marking the hour
Watching the birds in the trees
listening to their voices
for as long as I wish
I am there again as I tell you this
I can feel the land bracing for rain
It will fall heavy yet it will be welcome
The earth itself is in my body
Home calling to me once more

Is There Heaven

Early morning
8am
Creeping warmth
of the Sun
The town bell
strikes the hour
Children are walking
to school
An old man
rides a bicycle
to meet his niece
for breakfast
I get out of my
hammock
My feet touch tile
as I open windows
and doors
letting in air
and light
I walk past
the kitchen
into the yard
and sit at
the table
Chirping
and flitting
Wind amplifies
the leaves
I book I left
sitting there
I open it
Begin to read
Lost in this
heaven
Home
Quiet
In the place
where nothing
and everything
resides

Waking There

Am I really dreaming if
I find myself thinking of waking
in my grandparents house
Waking to quiet sounds
Rising from my hammock
Letting my feet touch tiled floors
In the near distance I hear
the town hall bell ring
I walk outside and let
the morning wash over me
I find my aunts milling about
Opening the store as school
children make their way to class
I find a place to sit and I
pull out one of my books and
begin to read and start my day

The Old Shack

He had just woken up from an overly long nap
and saw that it was almost 11p.m. That was
pretty much an entire Saturday evening gone.
Normally, he would just go to the bar down the
street for a few rounds to pass the time and talk
to the regulars but he was more broke than usual
this night. He put on shoes and a hoodie and got
in his car. He drove through the neighborhood
and started hitting the major streets. He inched
closer and closer to the beach. Next thing he
knew he was driving along the black coast.
The sound of unseen waves steady as a heart
beat on the sand. He loved this stretch of beach
late at night. Hardly anyone around to disturb
him. Just the steady pace of the car moving home
across the distances. Finally, the shore disappeared
from view as the road began to slope downward
towards a stoplight. He came to a stop and sat there
waiting for the light to turn. He passed a small beach
bar that looked modestly busy. It was called 'The
Beach Shack'. He passed it and continued on through
the neighborhood. He slowed down and parked his car
in front of an old bungalow. He looked at it for a moment
and began to think of all the times he had spent there
with Annie. All the times he had woken up next to her.
The hours spent in the living room and bedroom. The smells
of dinner wafting through the house. The soft padding of
their cat Candy back when she was still alive.
That was all gone. She was gone. Only he remained.
He decided he would drop by the shack tonight after all.

Routine

I felt her get out of bed and the sudden absence
of her body next to mine. I saw her at the foot
of the bed, skin bare in the slight chill of morning.
She gathered her towel and things to take a shower.
I let my mind wander as the sound of falling water
came steady from the bathroom. I gazed at the ceiling
as though I could divine the future from it. How much
of this life has been a dream? How much of it have
I actually lived to its potential? How much time yet
remained? I heard the falling water stop and the glass
door slide open. I could imagine the contours of her
being dried off. I thought of all the small touches we
had given other, touches of hands, fingers gently
grazing the nape of the neck, hands stroking the full
length of our backs. This comfortable intimacy.
She walked back into the room wearing her favorite
robe with her hair pulled up into a towel. She smiled
at me in the way that has always left me hopelessly
in love with her. "Are you going to take a shower?"
she asked. "I'll take one in a minute. Not in a big
rush right now." I said. "I'm going to have some
breakfast. Do you want me to fix you anything?"
she asked. "I'll probably just have some milk and
cereal." I said. She walked over and leaned down
to kiss me on the lips. That natural sweetness of
heart and body. How many years had I lived
without it in my life? She stepped out of our room
towards the kitchen. The residual warmth of her
shower was calling. I closed my eyes and found
myself so near and so far away.

Dreams That Call

Awake yet still dreaming
I see my past and future
Aligned within the same place
The place my parents called home
The place they left for a new life
I hear it's whispers calling
Through years and memory
It is patient with it's call
Calling a son home
To roots and soil
Blood of my ancestors
Home to those who gave
Me this life and
Gave life to
Them in turn

Journey Home

Light growing dim in the sky
You watch from bed through the window
You ask your daughter to let the breeze in

Slowly-

Essence lifts
into the

sky

Marrow

I feel as though I cannot stay asleep.
My mind is remembering the mornings
at my grandparents house in Yucatan.
My two young cousins would already
be at school. Aunt C would be opening
the store while Aunt G would most likely
be getting food for breakfast. My grand-
parents would be comfortably asleep.
If I hadn't already woken up I probably
would be shortly. The bell in the town
square would toll and announcements
would be made.

This is where my spirit rises.
My blood flows from here.

I listen to the birds speaking
and become calmed by their voices.

The smell of the ground and the warmth
of the air are comfortable.

Bones of my ancestors are buried here.
I honor their memory with each return.

My past and future are tied with
the same thread.

Eating breakfast together with my aunts
at the table just outside the kitchen. A calm
routine. The cats lounge nearby.

My life reduced to the marrow.
Simplicity.

Cottage

Is it too late or too soon
to live out our fantasy

Beachside cottage alone
and together

Send out tendrils of hope
purely from habit

Close your eyes as my
hand strokes your hair

Everything confirmed
to dead memory

Sparks emerge from
time to time

Brief signs that some
life still within

When I hear the voice
of the Ocean

I wonder if you can
hear it too

Home Is No Destination

You imagine yourself back in a memory
A place you were at peace
Ask yourself
                     Where can peace be found?
You believe it to be a destination
A place that must be traveled to
This answer is close
Though not entirely correct
When you close your eyes
I'm going to ask you
to breathe in and out steadily
Focus solely on this
There will be thoughts chattering
But they will peel away
Until gradually even your voice
Will grow quiet
This is where you should be
The lives so many of us lead
overflow with distraction
Steady yourself against this
Go home in silence
Listen to the night
Sit and breathe
Close your eyes

Journey Home

I and the water
  flowing through the street
  are the same
Passing through
  looking to meet
and be part
  of the great Ocean
once more

Home / Less

Indifferent Earth

Place of my birth

Silence follows me

I bristle again

Listening

Listening

For a home

I cannot find

Night Bloom

Nights of endless wandering
Through lamplit boulevards
Cities blend into one another
Indistinct and uniform
I open my windows
Cool evening air
Tousles my hair
Heartbeat steadies
To the time of the ballad
Braking to a stop
Impatient heart
Heavy foot
Green sets me alight
Forward rush
Into midnight light
Deep breath
Exhale
Blood of the city
From my marrow
It comes
Flows through me
A creature
At home in this place
Sweet Moon
Kiss me as a lover

Visitation

I told my Aunt G____ that I wanted to visit
my grandparents.
I told her that I wanted
to go by myself.
She insisted she should go with me.
I hesitated but agreed.

I tied my sneakers and wore a pair
of comfortable shorts. It was
a warm day after all.

I met her at the door.
She had an umbrella with her
to protect her from the blazing
midday sun.

We began to walk down
the gravel road that cut through
our town. It was calm
except for the occasional sound
of a passing car.

We walked into a small market
to buy a couple of votive candles
and a book of matches
and were on our way.

As we reached the outskirts
of the town we passed
a shrine for the Virgin Mary
and walked on.

Finally, we came to a gravel path.
Beyond that point lay nothing
but jungle stretching for miles
until the next closest town.

We walked down the gravel path
until at last we reached the gates.
We sat at the benches for a moment
before pressing on.

As we walked through the gates
I could only marvel at the pure stillness.
We turned to the left until at last
we faced their graves.

My grandfather, Alfonzo,
had died first. I was in high school
when he passed. My grandmother,
Donata, passed only a few years ago.

I set the candles down
and lit their wicks.
My aunt was watching in silence.

When I was done
I stood there for a few moments
and thought about all I knew,
and mostly,
all I didn't know about them.

I knew that without them
I could not be there at that moment.

I knew there had been many sacrifices
by them to provide a better life
for my Father.

Even he had to leave them
to find his own place in this world.

I turned to my Aunt
and we walked back up the gravel path
to the main road

back to my grandparent's home
to have lunch with my Mother
and her parents.

Recovery

My mind will not sleep

so I indulge it this evening

as we stay up together

listening to the night

    steady sounds beneathe

    the tips of my fingers

caked sweat dried

on my skin from

    another time

    another place
