mind the gap

Nothing is wrong
Everything is fine
The sun is shining
The waves are crashing
The birds flit between branches
their songs filling the air
Yet I sit here alone
separated from you
with a continent
between us

Traverse

Together but apart but
Together but apart but
Together is what matters

Love can exist and change
and change with us

Thinking of us
Thinking of how I was
A foolish young man
in love with you
and who still is

My love has changed
but it is love none the less

I see you now as you are
Daughter Mother Wife
Your smile is still the same
Your heart is still pure

I still love you
I always will

The tides have come in
and my heart has grown
and still it grows

The Drive

Alone together we go
Up the 5
Miles of emptiness
Stretching vast
Past the towns
And gas stations
Along the way
Miles and hours
Fall behind us
Town to City
To nothingness
Drive through it all
Searching for the place
We hope to find
And we'll know it
When we stop there
Small town by the sea
No stop lights to be found
Just a solitary stop sign
At the town square
Rolling hills of green
By the cemetery
Waters lapping the tiredness
Away from our eyes

crossings

Leaves tremble and shake
in early morning wind
Nearby a bird chirps
sitting on a branch
People waking
one by one
from their
beds

This
is morning
yet how much
more this is as well
Time is a distance we
are crossing together as
best we can while we can
in this life of passing lights

The Way to Where?

If the answer is there
What will you take it to mean
Will you take it at all
Unspool my ego from my soul
What good has it done me
Unbind my heart
Let it beat freely
These days of learning
Hard lessons must be lived
Hard lessons yet to come

December morning
Where are you now my dearest
Flock of birds take flight

Saturday, December 10, 2016

Your arms remain open
Though I am miles and miles away.

Cursed Beast

Between spaces
Frames of reference removed
Bridging distance by means
Once thought to be fantasy
How can love be felt
Through prolonged absence
How can love linger
Like a beast cursed
With immortality

Toma'a

Don't care to be overwhelmed by the natural ease
Of a carefree smile
                               Yet
                                      I am
and it belongs to you

I have never told you

I am sure
               you don't know

about this intimate infatuation

Beauty can only go so far

and that is a hard-earned piece of wisdom

but in you I see

                         that duty to family

to responsibility

                          and most importantly

to honor the truth of yourself

Oh how endless I find your beauty

in such light

I watch mute from afar

To fall in love from a distance is the only folly.

Encompass

Life conspires against us without ever really trying.
We can only look at Her and tell ourselves
that it's fine    it's ok    that we don't mind.
We fill distance with intermittent transmissions
to better solidify the bonds we profess to.
How many ways can we say
love? How many ways can we say
you? How many ways can we say
I? Those words are limited in what
they can convey. We are limited
by time and physical need but feed
on that which has no physical presence
but whose effects are felt
in the same way a still pond
with a thousand pebbles thrown
into it at once. What is the point
of describing the longing desire
that makes one ache and yearn?
There is a point. We can understand
each other in this way. The I and you
does not have to be us. It can be anyone.
But for now let us say a simple sentence
to one another. Three syllables can be
the whole of the world.

In the Heart of Winter

The heart of Winter
is a good time to remember
the comfort of warmth,

both literal and figurative.
The heart of Winter
is a good time to remember

those we have lost and the
memories of them we hold
within, to carry us forward.

The heart of Winter
is a good time to give thanks
for the simple act of being.

The heart of Winter
is a good time to cross the
distances of space

and think of those who
would be at our side
if they could.

The heart of Winter
is the reminder we need,
after the leaves have fallen

and the branches are bare,
that our lives remain in season.
The heart of Winter

leaves me breathless at
the journey so far and
the journey yet remaining.

We Will Cross These Distances Together.

bridging

Mute transmissions
sent through psychic vibrations

you don't believe in any
of that

Stepping back
through antiquated means
of communication:
-fax machine
-rotary phone
-telegrams

though, morse code
still has its uses

bridging distant shores
one continent

cannot kiss
the sand of another

water serves as messenger
winding around the cape

of good hope-
reaching for another shore

If you are in my thoughts
you are never really far at all.

Don't Write Back

if you are busy
but do let me know
how things are.
If I call
please know
it is because
I can't remember
the last time
I heard your voice.
If I ask
if you are free
anytime soon
it is because
I miss you
and wish to see
you. I know you
are busy
and I've already
said that
but I do. Should
I keep missing you?
Did we grow a
part without
saying anything?
Without feeling
it happen?
A weed is growing
where the roots
of a tree have
cracked the concrete
in front of my home.
I do not step on it.
I do not pull it out.

vast

a distance we cannot cross

exchanging a longing gaze

the chasm grows wider

Canyons

I wish to close the gap

but it only grows

further and farther

further and farther

til only echoes remain

Stay As Long As You Like

Don't go so soon.
Stay as long as you like.
It's no bother.

You've been missed.
Won't you sit down?
I insist.

Would you like some
thing to drink?
I'll be right back.

Here you go.
Cheers.
To new beginnings.

It always feels like
this, doesn't it?
Something is always

changing, always
ending. Don't worry
too much about it,

just enjoy the moment.
It's so good to see you.
Where does time go?

All Travels

How many

more miles

to go?

Many,

many,

more miles.

Then-
