For You and Danny

I sent you a message
You called me right away
I didn't expect
to hear your voice so soon
You asked if it was intuition
or if I had heard the news
I said intuition
You told me your brother
died last night in hospital
That all of you were
by his side as he transitioned
Tears, disbelief, relief
all gave way to one another
and back again
You said he had been ill
He had been worsening
I could say nothing
He was only in his fifties
He was young
You are mourning
the loss of a future
You told your children
and they cried too
Your daughter said
it was a sad Friday
and you said yes it was
I'm writing this
the morning after
our conversation
in the dark just before
the sunrise
A million more things
I could say
But I told you
I love you
and you said it back
and

Planes and the Nighttime Beach

We can feel it in the air
Things have been difficult lately
As if a black tar has been spread
into our lives
Hope has been difficult to
hold on to at times
It has pushed many
to points of their own breaking

Sitting outside with you
Talking beneathe the loud
city night sky
We open up doors
We tend to leave closed
to many in our lives

How much lighter
Does the weight of the soul
Feel when it speaks
And unburdens itself

I suggested we take a drive
Though I did not tell you where
You placed trust in me

Through city streets and freeways
We traversed this home of ours
Down empty stretches of street
We came upon the beach at night
Darkened with waves still crashing

At last I pulled over
There we were facing the beach
Beneathe the beaming moonlight

So we sat and talked
And watched the planes taking off
From time to time overhead

We talked about how the passengers
Overhead had no idea we were
Sitting on the ground watching them go
Talking about them
Wondering where they going

That could be us
Seen by strangers passing in the streets
Not knowing where we are going
Though we are figuring it out
One day and one night at a time

There doesn't need to be a big answer
Simply the power to wake
To breathe and feel
To try again
To not feel as though things are lost

After a while of feeling the cool
Air of the beach
We got back in the car
And I drove you home
As we made our way back
To the beating heart of the city

Fox & Bear

Fox met Bear at the coffee shop. It had been a long
time since the old friends had met. Fox asked Bear if he
remembered the first time they met in the forest. Bear said
he did. It had been many years ago on a spring day, the
kind that people tend to write about, when Bear saw Fox
under a tree. He asked Fox how he was and Fox said he
was sad. Bear asked why. Fox began to explain how alone
he had been feeling and that no sense of beauty was enough
to do away with it. Bear listened and then he listened some
more. He placed a paw on Fox's shoulder and Fox looked
at him. There were trails on the fur of his face where tears
had streaked down. Fox looked at Bear and said "Thank
You." Fox and Bear stayed friends from that point on.
They would make it a point to see each other as often as
they could make time for each other. It was always a great
relief for them to be together and talk. They had long since
left the forest and had been living in the city for some time.
The city had a strange beauty that the forest could not match.
In some ways it was even darker and more cruel than the
life of the forest. They enjoyed the hustle and bustle, the
sense of action, the motion of a place that seemingly never
slept. When they would meet up in the city they would
often meet for coffee or have lunch or dinner. No one
ever disturbed them or cast an awkward glance at their
table. People were content to merely let them be. And so
they were happy. Content to be themselves as much as
anyone else in the city, regardless of their looks or back
ground. Fox would still dream from time to time about
his youth and the countless hours spent in the forest
listening to the birds, enjoying the coolness of early
morning, feeling the dampness of the ground on his
paws, and the way light would scatter through the
branches of the trees when he would look up and just
watch. Bear would dream of the forest as well. Often
Bear would dream of finding a river or stream and
walking into it, the water soaking his paws as he stood
there waiting for fish to feed himself. At those times
he would know how perfect things had been then. How
whole it all really was. Sometimes Bear would wake
from those dreams and feel for a fresh caught fish in
his mouth but there would be nothing except for the
memory of a dream. He would then look out of his
window and know the forest was still there, waiting,
if he were to ever return. In his heart he had no doubt,
regardless of what his conscious mind would tell him.
He could feel the song of his life being sung through
his blood. The city might be home but the forest
would always be the place calling him back, unable
to let him go and he unable to resist the call. This made
Bear restless. Sometimes Fox and Bear would talk
about these feelings and dreams. They agreed that they
both still missed the forest. They decided that they
would take a trip back together to remind themselves
of that place of their birth. And so, the day came
that they got in Bear's car and drove for hours out
of the city until it fell away like a piece of clothing
that had been tossed to the ground. At last they came
home. They got out of the car and breathed in the air.
It was crisp and clean and filled their lungs as they
deeply inhaled and exhaled. They said nothing as
they smiled and looked at each other. They took off
their shoes and clothes and walked into the forest
in the perfection that they had been made. At once
they could feel the dampness of the ground and the
sound of the birds as light lit the branches and leaves
into a theater of color and sound. Nearby was the
sound of water and together they bounded towards
it as their ancestors did before them and countless
others would after them.

What I Have Learned

We could not live without each other
but we learned how to.

There is happiness to be found in this life
without those we love.

Our hearts have dulled to whatever pain
we once felt.

I can see your face and not think of our
separation but remember our closeness.

Dear Friend

How quickly life can tear at our flesh
and undo the thin threads
that bind us.

Stand by my side
if I lay ill.

I will stay by your side
without you uttering a word.

Everything will be taken
in time but

I will fight until
my eyes grow too tired

to take in the fading sun.

Living Among the Stars

So many names
and faces scattered

in my memory
I feel awed

by the constellations
in my galaxy

How lucky I am
to live among such stars

To Forgive

We learn to forgive
in time.

The pain must subside.

Thoughts must be
collected into

a box and sealed
with a ribbon.

We learn to forgive
in time

because forgiveness
is a growth of love,

of maturity.

I can forgive
because I love you
still.

I can forgive
because

your love
is only yours
to give.

I am lucky
to have had you

in the way I did.

Mileage

A pair of handprints pressed into the glass
on the passenger side of the car-
smeared ever slightly,
a handmade Valentine's Day card faded
in a rarely touched nook,
a polaroid picture slipped between
scraped and scuffed cds,
accumulated ash and dirt
from driving miles
and miles with the windows
rolled down,
my youth draining
into the climbing numbers
of the odometer.
A car as weathered
as my mind.
It carries on as though
the check engine light
hasn't been staring at me
the last fifteen-thousand miles.

Quote Me On This

I don't need to live forever
as long as I live on in
the hearts of those I loved.

Don't Write Back

if you are busy
but do let me know
how things are.
If I call
please know
it is because
I can't remember
the last time
I heard your voice.
If I ask
if you are free
anytime soon
it is because
I miss you
and wish to see
you. I know you
are busy
and I've already
said that
but I do. Should
I keep missing you?
Did we grow a
part without
saying anything?
Without feeling
it happen?
A weed is growing
where the roots
of a tree have
cracked the concrete
in front of my home.
I do not step on it.
I do not pull it out.

Strangers No More

You don't care about the suffering of others,
never mind my thoughts on that.

We're self-centered, are the center of the known
universe. It is easy to see why past generations

believed the Earth to be the center of Creation.
God must have laughed but thought it best

to let us figure out the truth on our own.
On second thought, I shouldn't paint you

with such broad strokes. I'm sure there have
been times you have shed tears for those

you have never met, mourned those you
never had a chance to meet. I'm thinking about

you right now, who you are, and wondering
if you know me and the contents of my heart

as it beats. I fear much as you do. I love much
as you do. I am as vulnerable and strong

as you have proven yourself to be. Perhaps
I love you. Perhaps I wish to be near you.

It feels good to think that we are not alone,
that perhaps we have just made connection.

A Moment of Beauty

I don't wish to be vague
so I'll be specific.

I'd like to write about beauty.
Let's not concern ourselves

with the philosophical
discussion that has plagued

us since time immemorial.
I'm thinking of the time

I held someone I loved
in my arms. We were

alone in a way we had
never been before or since.

Sitting on a couch
and watching the lights

stream into the darkened
room. She didn't want

to leave, or at least
she said that, and I didn't

wish her to leave either.
There are other details

that complicated our lives
at that moment, but I still

remember us sitting in
a light that not many

have seen or could
understand. I'm thinking

of her, us, that moment
because it has passed.

It is past.

A Few Words On This

Better letters than no words at all.

Better to be in thought than not thought of.

Distance builds better friendships through longing.

_____

Communicating through cul-de-sac's of meaning-

meaninglessness comes to stay awhile.
