Human Barbarism
Humans have always been barbaric conquerors.
Our nature has not changed.
We merely have twisted our barbarism
Into different guises to make them acceptable
To our times.

Uncertain Light
I'm writing this for you
because I hope you will
read this some day
and remember when things
were simpler though
you wouldn't have thought
so at the time
Hardship grows and mounts
as we age and awareness
of this world comes to view
Perhaps you'll remember
writing this and addressing
it to yourself while at home
sick on a Saturday night
while deep in the heart
of the city protestors are
roaming the streets
How little there is
that is fixed
These days
These nights
Bathed in uncertain light
because I hope you will
read this some day
and remember when things
were simpler though
you wouldn't have thought
so at the time
Hardship grows and mounts
as we age and awareness
of this world comes to view

These days
These nights
Bathed in uncertain light
Water Moving in Circles
Is history a river
feeding and flowing
into itself
time after time
age after age
repeating events
with new characters?
feeding and flowing
into itself
time after time
age after age
repeating events
with new characters?

Unreliable Narrator
There isn't a story to tell
It's simple and boring
But I'll tell it if you want
I don't remember how we met
It seems as though we've always
known each other
How can memory be so unreliable
How can my narrative be so
skewed and filled with holes
I told you there isn't a story to tell
Just patchwork bits of words
edging together just close enough
to make a semblance of order
I've let so many days pass
And now another is upon me
There isn't a story to tell
You're here with me for now
Ready to listen if I'm ready to speak
It's simple and boring

Questionnaire
Do you know how your grandparents fell in love?
Did they struggle and if so, how?
Did they lose a child,
a relative you never knew you had?
Have you asked your parents how they fell in love?
Did they wait for approval?
Did they elope
and leave home?
Have you ever been in love?
Do you remember how you felt the last time
someone broke your heart?
Are you in love right now?
Special instructions: attach any additional paper
required to provide an adequate response.

How History Ages
Read a story through lines gently worn
into the faces of our families
as we age along parallel paths.
Some of us will always be older
and some will always be younger.
Some will always be gone.
Are there answers to be found
to our questions? Can one thing
truly explain another?
My grandfather was said to have
read much. I have never seen his books.
What is there to know?
Are they gathering dust in boxes
in rural Mexico? Have those pages
long yellowed and turned to dust-
does it matter?

The Sum Result of a Decade
As students of history
we cannot pretend
to be surprised
at the outcome.

To A Future Audience
Burning numbness infects reason easily.
Cold-eyed stare from an ever present voyeur,
judging silently and unseen.
The seer and the unaware,
a relationship marked by uneven exchange.
Reciprocity is a word almost too long for a breath,
our shared tongue is drowning in a deluge
of newspeak and double-think.
Enlightenment was far too brief
an era in our shared history.

Our Perception of History
We've wasted our kindness
on each other.
Memories or ill-thought
recollections, are
we becoming the
revisionists that
history fears?
on each other.
