to return from nothingness
night after night
this is our condition
morning daze
bright shining sun or
clouded over continents of gray
ever present wind coming in from the sea
water cannot stay still
continually crashes upon the shore
mind and body
together for as long
as the night holds the day

Something and Nothing
I remember the time I sat at the end of the bar
waiting for you to come. I waited so long,
long enough to think you were not coming.
I had just finished my first drink when you
walked through the doors. You said you were
sorry for running so late. Don't worry about it,
I said. Well, I'm pretty sure that's what I said.
The voices of that busy night became a steady
chatter of indistinct drunkenness easily ignored.
We lost hours to drinks and talk. Our honesty
came easy but grew quicker with each empty
glass. What were doing that night?
Drinking. Talking. Drinking. Talking. Ignoring
everything until the next day. Was our talk
small? Was it too big? Or was it just right?
We had to leave so we left. What did we leave
in those empty glasses? Maybe a sliver of ice,
more likely, nothing at all.

A Day Like This
I cannot will my mind to nothingness
on a day
such as this-
sitting at my desk
the ambient sounds
of birds in trees
while a plane
flies overhead.
I cannot decipher the language
being chirped
because it is not for me to know.
Stillness cannot be bought
only attained
in measured doses
with much effort.
Even then
there is no guarantee
of finding that elusive
state of being.
My mind fills with thoughts
of worry and
needs to be filled.
Unease is an easy thing to find.
My worries are temporary
stops that are given too much weight.
If I could speak to you directly
I do not know what words I would have
for you.
Do you have words for me?
If either of us have any questions
let us raise our hands now
and call on each other in the order
our hands went up.

A Late Start
I did nothing because there was nothing to do.
I read something,
I wrote something,
I listened to something,
because there was nothing to do.
Afterwards, I napped.
When I woke there was something to do
and that upset me terribly.
I dressed myself
and walked out of the house
in order to do nothing
somewhere else.
