Summer Rain

Rain falling in darkness

A flash through the trees

A distant rumbling

Trembling

El Dios de Lluvia

My cup overflows
I lap the water
from the table top

Precious
too precious
to waste

What did
Father
used to say

Remember your
grandmother
bringing water

up from the well
bucket
by bucket

Unrelenting sun
Eight children
to feed

Her husband
toiling
in the fields

Cha'ac
the old God
gifting rain

This Morning's Rain

Waking from the dream
Pitter-patter sounds of
falling water
drift into my ears
Unexpected grey
blankets the morning sky
Today is here
like always
Now
is the time
It always is

Fallen Rain

to wake
to see
to hear

fallen rain
moist earth
light filtering
through clouds

outside the window
branches and trembling leaves

birds flit from tree to tree
taking flight
traversing a vast grey sky

Winter Day

Cold wind through grey skies
Rainfall turned to bitter hail
Stillness in the evening
Eye of the Moon
watching over us all

A Distant Fire Burning

Everything aflame
Fire turning us to ash
So you dreamt
So you told me
It's raining today
and there's no place
for us to go
Stay here
Stay here
So we do
I sit next to you
Staring at the sky
through glass
Everything concealed
Everything revealed
Your hands reach
for me Gooseflesh
on my arms
Touch me again
Drive the cold away
Somewhere
a fire is burning
Somewhere
someone dances
beneathe falling ash

Grey Season

Morning begins
with a grizzled grey sky
bleeding rain onto the ground

This winter settles in
as we ready for this time

You look out your window
Wind shakes skeletal branches
Birds are nowhere to be seen

We do not migrate
Here we must remain

before the drive

Sitting in my car
looking through the windshield
flecked with rain
resting on the glass
The world glimmers wetly
for a moment
before I turn on the wipers
and see things as
they are once more

After the Rain

The rain fell for years
Day after day
it came and came
and soaked the land
Eventually everyone
believed it would never
end
One morning the heavy
grey clouds parted
A crack of blue peered
through the haze
It grew larger
until the sky
was beaming beautifully
and the warmth
of the sun touched
everyones skin
Children went outside
and began to play
Their parents
watched them
and marveled
at the warmth of life.

Dancing by yourself in your room
Waiting for the rain
Beat moves through the air
Voices fill the morning
Move your feet
Do not stay still
Rain will fall
Pitter patter rhythm
Is coming back again

Edge of the Heavens

When you wake up to a gray and overcast morning
Ready to burst with rain do you feel inconvenienced
at the coming storm or do you ready yourself for the
deluge I'll often sit and find myself writing about the
view outside and the shifting moods of my mind in
those early hours Obscured by the clouds but I know
the sun is hidden behind the wall of rain It has to be
It is There is nothing here but relief at another day
under the edge of the heavens

The Heavens grow too heavy with
tears

Three Thoughts

I.
She is peaceful when she sleeps
I walk away
as quietly as my feet will allow
and let her dream

II.
the breeze swept through the leaves
and rain began to fall

III.
I bristle against my own inadequacies

If only the rain could

wash away more than

just our thirst.

2am

I awoke to the sound of midnight

rain and wondered

out loud to no one

in particular at all.

Two Thoughts From The Drive Home

I.

Insects with halogen eyes

stare unblinkingly

as their red-lit rears run by.

The Assault

They arrive with the sound of a thousand footsteps

all marching to different beats. The first moments

are the heaviest as they spread across every surface.

Their effect can be measured by the mark on every

exposed inch. They collect into pools and puddles,

strategizing their next move.

Reinforcements arrive after the first wave has eased,

the bombardment intensifies as eyes peek from behind

slatted windows, safely hidden from their assault.

Suddenly, without warning, silence. The troops

on the ground are left behind, some left to dissipate,

others taken hostage to be dealt with later.

Eyes peek through the windows once more,

the scene changes, the air is cleansed. Lungs breathe

deep, a reminder of an ancient covenant emerges.
